For a foreigner, it is also important to consider a often overlooked point: the registration of temporary residence (khai báo tạm trú). The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security has a system that allows establishments/hosts to carry out this declaration for foreigners. Therefore, the right approach is not to look solely for "the cheapest" option, but for accommodation where the owner properly accepts the formalities related to foreigners.
